Mmmmm, cat placenta

Tonight there was a much heated discussion on what exactly defines "learning." Well there were different scenarios given and we were arguing whether these scenarios actually represented learning. So one of them was about a cat that licks its newly born kitten clean and then eats the placenta. The question was whether the mother cat did this because it knew that these actions could prevent her kitten from contracting an infection. Yeah, this went on for like 20 minutes, all I could hear was placenta over and over again. People were screaming things like, "Maybe the cat slipped on it's own goo and accidentally had her mouth fly onto the placenta and then eat it." I just wanted to move it along. But seriously, come on, cats & dogs, they just eat stuff off the floor. It's not like the a cat runs a test and eats placenta the first time and then doesn't the second time around to see what the results are.
