Reading can be painful
I had a slight accident during my read-aloud today. I was continuing our story and out of nowhere, I feel this throbbing pain on my left thumb. I thought it was strange but I didn't bother to check it out and continued reading since the kids were so into it. Minutes later, I notice all these red marks on the pages and I'm thinking that someone drew in the book. I finally stop and realize that the red marks were my blood and somehow my left thumb had been gashed opened! I looked at the book and saw this long thin rectangular sheet of metal popping out of the page. The metal must have sliced my thumb as I was holding the page or turning it. At this point, it's bleeding pretty badly and my thumb really hurts. The kids are all freaked out, screaming that I was cut by a blade. I had to explain to them that it was not a blade but rather the library's system of placing those magnet strips so that you can't take books out without checking them out first.
I had my kids help me out by getting me the band aid, tissues and even opening it up so that I could wrap it around my finger. They were so concerned and it was really sweet letting them have a chance to take care of me. One of the boys started kicking his desk and saying that he was really mad that a book cut me. One of the "smarter" boys decides to tell me: "Huh, so I guess reading really is painful!" Har har, he's so hilarious.
